Festivals in August

8/1: Summer Concerts in the Redwood Grove.

Nestled in the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens, this spectacular setting comes to life every Thursday evening of the summer. soaking up the atmosphere in the Grove’s natural amphitheater, surrounded by majestic redwoods in the early evening light, is in itself undoubtedly a one-of-a-kind experience.

Many audiences brought foods. Strong aroma of thin crust Pizza drove us crazy.  Getting hungrier and hungrier.  My charming professor and I escaped from grove and rushed into Mediterranean Restaurant on College Ave.

Japan-Fest8/10: Diablo Japanese American Summer Festival

I didn’t know it. I was in Walnut Creek with friend. Normally I take Ygnacio Valley Rd, however, I drove Treat Blvd to come home. Then I noticed there is Japanese Festival taking place. I put simple kimono then I went there. It was late, I missed all major demonstration such as Koto performance / Kendo /Judo / Taiko performance.

pistahan-S8/11: PISTAHAN Parade & Festival

It is Filipino art, dance, music and food festival. prior day had many interesting  performances according to a schedule. I watched Filipino Marshal Arts and ate Pancit. I didn’t enjoy, so I hop on BART and came home.

I noticed the word “Pilipino” on some guy’s jacket.  It is Tagalog, literally, Philippine, from Spanish Filipino and First Known Use: 1936.
How about: “Philippines” vs. “Filipino”
The Philippines were named for King Philip II of Spain. They were «Las Islas Filipinas», which was anglicized to the Philippine Islands.
The noun form retains the F (Filipino), while the adjective form uses Ph (Philippine Embassy).
Why Philippines is spelled with “ph” and Filipino is spelled with “f”.
Also, Philippines is spelled with two Ps and Filipino only one. Spanish is really big on eliminating unnecessary letters

8/24: America’s Cup Louis Vuitton Cup

LV-logoI was on “waiting list #9”. It seems many people cancelled. Now I can go.

Why do I want to see race? Because they are held every few years and next race will be somewhere else if Oracle Team USA lose. Now I have a chance to see it in SF. The Defense of the America’s Cup itself is in September 2013. The Challenger Selection Series, known as the Louis Vuitton Cup, will take place in July and August, 2013. The dates for the actual America’s Cup Match are September 7-21, 2013.

America’s Cup September 7-21, 2013   Two 30 minute (approx) races scheduled daily: 1:10 pm & 2:10 pm. Races schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions and/or cheating scandals. This is a best of 17 series, so the first team to nine victories wins, so the racing could end as early as September 14th.
