5/9/2013 Broadway Musical Mary Poppins at Orpheum Theater San Francisco.
Bert, the ultimate chimney sweep, takes a gravity-defying walk up the stage proscenium as he dances. It was big surprise. Then I thought, “Wow, it is just like ‘Derek’s Gravity-Defying Dance in Dancing with the stars”. The effect is spectacular, wonder how it’s done. I think stage/set construction was excellent. The sets transform ceaselessly, with elements sliding and dropping into place. One small disappointment was that Winifred Banks is no longer the suffragette of the film. It was worth seeing.

Taking Hula Dance lessons 5/7 thru 6/25
Why I enrolled Hula class? There was Health Expo at Concord Senior Center in late April and there were demonstration by several dance classes. I liked Hula Dance demo. All senior hula dancers did fantastic job. Instructor Rose is easy-going; her dance movement is smooth and flawless. A lot of Aloha in her.
5/12/2013 Taipei Folk Dance at Yerba Buena Gardens San Francisco.
I forgot to bring my camera.
Direct from Taiwan, the Taipei Folk Dance Theater performs dance originating from various ethnic cultures in Taiwan, including its aboriginal tribes. Yes, I definitely enjoyed dances. They changed costume for each dances.
Yerba Buena Gardens Festival is free, it presents classical, world, jazz music, contemporary and traditional dance, theater, children’s and family programs, and cultural events.
I went to Japan town to shop after YBG. I didn’t remember effective date of San Francisco’s plastic bag ban ordinance (for retail businesses. It was last October). I had to pay 30 cents per brown paper bag. Restaurants will be included in the ordinance starting in October 2013.
It is good idea, I think. Because, millions of plastic bags enter the Bay each year and the bags entangle, suffocate many animals. Bring Reusable Bags everywhere from now on. Break the Plastic Bag Habit!
5/15/2013 The Culinary Institute of America (CIA)
The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Greystone, located on a 30-acre campus in the heart of the Wine Country in St. Helena, California.
I joined the afternoon tour, about 3o minutes in length. Our guide explained the history of Greystone and how it came to be a campus for the CIA. The Greystone campus is situated in and around the Greystone Cellars building, built in 1888 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Greystone Cellars was formerly owned by Christian Brothers.
The Bakery Café provides a real-world retail extension for the students of the Baking and Pastry Arts Certificate at CIA Greystone.
I decided to have lunch at The Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant, it provides real-life, hands-on experience for students in the associate degree program in culinary arts. Sitting in the dining room watching the students was a highlight for me. My server; Grier Cosby from Mississippi was very polite, attentive, and friendly – (maybe because I was sitting alone?) Grier’s wonderful service was my high point of the day.
I went to The Spice Islands Marketplace. Store offers an array of cooking equipment, cookbooks, uniforms, and other culinary-related items. There took TV course about chocolate there. Examine Cocoa Bean, Cocoa Nib, Cocoa Power, Cocoa butter, Unsweetened Chocolate Pure Cane Sugar, Couverture Chocolate 58%, 70%, “Compound” Chocolate, 70% Occumare Valley Venezuela, 70% Sambirano Valley Madagascar, and 70% Guayas River Basin Ecuador. I don’t care chocolate because I don’t fancy them.
Short drive on same Main St. there are high-end stores and museums on both side of street. I snapped photo that apron said “Wine takes the Bitch right out of me” I know it is humor.
5/18/2013 Balinese Music & Dance
Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a sixty-member company of musicians and dancers, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, specializing in the performing arts of Bali.
Every parts of body movement is Spiritual symbolism. Hand and fingers positions and gestures emphasize the dance’s delicate intricacy. Balinese dance is very similar to Indian Hindu dance, because it was transmitted from India.
Balinese dance is unique, dynamic, and the movement is very complex. I noticed “twisting hands”, “trembling the fingers”, and “eye-movements”. It mesmerized me. I enjoyed dance & music tremendously. I think it takes years of dedication, and hard work. See you next year!
I browsed a few stores in Westfield San Francisco Centre, it is only one block away from YBG. It is huge, upscale, urban shopping center.
